Chimie & Terroir

A national event rooted in the Landes region. Launched in 2008 in Brive-la-Gaillarde, the Chemistry & Local Products meetings take place each year in a different French city outside of major university centers. The aim is to bring chemistry closer to everyday life by grounding it in the natural, gastronomic, and industrial resources specific to each region. The Landes region, with its pine forests, gastronomy, and aquatic biodiversity, offers an ideal setting for this 16th edition. The program includes six hands-on workshops—pine resin, pigment chromatography, cream-butter emulsion, hidden sugars in food—seventeen scientific demonstrations—oyster biomineralization, bioluminescence, the carbon cycle, cyanotype, a chemical escape game—and five information booths featuring the IPREM (CNRS/UPPA), the French Chemical Society, and the Robert Wlérick High School to guide students and families. Two after-work mini-conferences are offered: "Women in Science" at the high school and "Molecules on Our Plates" at the Landes Departmental Council building. A children's show, "Ernestte's Molecular Pranks for Barnab's Birthday," featuring the Clowns Chimifous, is also on offer, blending liquid nitrogen, colors, and chemical magic for all ages. School groups are welcome by registration on Thursday, May 28th and Friday, May 29th, from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The general public is welcome on May 28th and 29th from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and on Saturday, May 30th, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Additional mini-conferences will be held on May 28th and 29th.
